RESUMO

CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 12-year-old patient who complained about visual disturbances in left eye for 6 months. His visual acuity was 1/0.9, funduscopy in left eye revealed a free-floating cyst in the anterior vitreous. Magnetic resonance showed a low intense image in T1, and B-scan ultrasound confirmed a hypoechogenic cyst of 3.2 × 4.3 mm; ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed a normal ciliary body. CONCLUSION: Given the good VA the patient will be monitored periodically. If the cyst interferes with visual axis, management with Nd:YAG or Argon laser photocystotomy or remove it by pars plana vitrectomy has been advocated.

Objective: To analyze morphological macularchanges after uncomplicated cataract surgery andtheir correlation with age and arterial hypertension. Methods: Total macular volume (TMV), fovealvolume (FOVOL) and foveal thickness (FOV) inpatients who had undergone cataract surgery weremeasured using OCT3 Stratus® before surgery, theday after the intervention and one month later. Thedata were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 software. Results: The study group was composed of 114eyes from 114 patients. The mean TMV, FOVOLand FOV in the subgroup of patients with signalstrength over 6 before cataract surgery were 6.59(SD0.67) μm3; 0.16 (SD0.02) μm3 and 204.97(SD29.79) μm. One month after surgery the measurementswere TMV: 6.93 (SD0.56) μm3; FOVOL:0.17 (SD0.06) μm3 and FOV: 218.07 (SD87.60)μm. We found statistically significant differences(P<0.05) in TMV, but not in FOVOL or FOV. Thegroup of patients under 74 years showed a greaterincrease in TMV. Patients with arterial hypertensiondid not show an increase in TMV or FOV comparedto patients without arterial hypertension. Conclusions: We found a sub-morphologicalmacular oedema one month after uncomplicatedcataract surgery, with age being a risk factor fordeveloping a greater increase in TMV. Arterialhypertension does not seem to be a risk factor forthese changes(AU)

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate macular thickening, the state of the optic disc and retinal nerve fibers layer (RFNL) in patients with an actual episode of acute anterior uvetis (AAU) by optical coherence tomography (OCT), and compare them with a control group. METHODS: In this prospective, cross-sectional, observational and controlled study we recruited 27 consecutive eyes of 20 patients with an actual episode of AAU, age and sex-matched with 40 healthy eyes of 20 volunteers. The age ranged between 8 and 78 years old, and all were evaluated by the <>, <> and <> scans by OCT. The patients were evaluated twice in a period of 1 month in order to obtain an average between the two measurements by OCT. RESULTS: We found a statistically significant increase in macular volume in AAU eyes compared with control eyes. Total macular volume in uveitic eyes was 7.3 SD 0.6 mm(3) and in healthy eyes was 7.01 SD 0.3 mm(3) (mean SD standard deviation) (p<0.001). Indeed, we found a statistically significant increase in the superior RFNL thickness compared with controls. The Smax/Imax measurement was 1.05 SD 0.1 in pathological eyes and in healthy eyes it was 0.97 SD 0.1 (p<0.02). CONCLUSION: We found by OCT that patients suffering an AAU showed an increase in macular volume and superior RFNL thickness versus control eyes in the acute episode.
